Three finals spots are up for grabs in both the women’s and men’s competitions heading into the second last round of the JDH Hockey One League 2023 Season.
Heading into the penultimate round, every men’s team is in contention to qualify for the Finals Main Event, while there are four teams vying for three places in the women’s league.
NSW Pride Men and Perth Thundersticks Women, who are both undefeated this season, are the only two teams to have secured their place at the Finals Main Event.
Round 6 starts tomorrow night with a genuine double header blockbuster between Canberra Chill and Brisbane Blaze at the National Hockey Centre.
Both Blaze teams, who head into the clash against the Chill off the back of two impressive wins over the Tassie Tigers and HC Melbourne, can cement their finals spot with outright wins in the capital.
For the Chill Women, they can put one foot in the finals door with an outright win and would qualify if the Perth Thundersticks defeat NSW Pride on Sunday.
The Blaze Men will be without the league’s leading scorer, Kookaburra Jacob Anderson, however they regain Burras dynamo Diarmid Chappell.
On Saturday night all eyes will turn to Hobart as the men’s match between the Tassie Tigers and Adelaide Fire has a lot hinging on the result.
Kookaburras midfielder Josh Beltz will play his first match of the season after recovering from a hand injury, joining his brother Hayden in a Tassie Tigers outfit that will qualify for the finals with an outright win.
For Adelaide Fire Men, a win would keep their finals flame flickering for at least another week.
With both Tassie and Adelaide Women still chasing their first win of the season, the women’s match will have no bearing on the makeup of the finals although there is still plenty to play for in avoiding the wooden spoon.
The interest and intrigue continues in Perth on Sunday when the Thundersticks entertain the defending men’s and women’s champions, NSW Pride.
Having wrapped up the minor premiership, Perth Thundersticks can put a dent in the Pride’s finals aspirations with a fifth straight victory. However, NSW Pride Women head west brimming with confidence after putting Tassie to the sword last weekend.
With both NSW Pride and Perth Thundersticks men’s teams stacked with Kookaburras, and both teams entering the match in winning form, it promises to be one of the season’s must watch fixtures.
If the Thundersticks Men can secure an outright win and at least a shootout loss or better in their final two matches, they will play finals. For the Pride Men, they will be shooting to maintain top spot and remain as the only undefeated team.
