The Canberra Chill are thrilled to announce the securing of Irish trio, Katie Mullan, Roisin Upton, and Sarah Hawkshaw ahead of its 2023 Hockey One season.
The news follow’s last week’s announcements of former Hockeyroos, Edwina Bone and Anna Flanagan in the Chill’s training squad ahead of the Hockey One season.
Boasting 220 caps, Katie Mullan has been Ireland’s captain for since 2016, bringing an abundance of invaluable leadership and experience. Earning her first cap in 2012, Mullan has since been a mainstay in the Ireland squad, leading them to a silver medal at the Hockey World Cup in 2018. Mullan’s knowledge and expertise will undoubtedly help guide particularly the younger members of the Chill squad.
Also joining is Roisin Upton who first played alongside Mullan over decade ago when they represented Ireland at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Upton made her senior debut for Ireland in 2016 against Scotland and has become a pivotal member of their defence, now having played over 100 games. With a keen eye for goal, Upton has the ability to help further up the pitch providing an offensive threat. Upton’s versatility will make her an integral part for the Chill.
Rounding out the triad is Sarah Hawkshaw who has played 60 matches for Ireland since the start of 2019 when she made her senior debut. Hawkshaw has incredible endurance capabilities having played Gaelic football in her junior years and having competed as a cross country runner. Hawkshaw will prove to be an effective asset in the offensive half, strengthening the Chill’s attack.
Newly appointed head coach of the women’s Canberra Chill side, Matt Cook is delighted have some Irish luck ahead of his first Hockey One season.
“We are very excited to welcome Katie, Roisin, and Sarah to Canberra. All three athletes bring plenty of quality and unique attributes to our group. With almost 400 International caps between the girls, I feel their experience will benefit our squad on and off the pitch.
“All of the girls are very versatile and play in different lines so I am confident they will fit in seamlessly into our squad. We expect the girls to be in great condition following their European championships in late August and we look forward to welcoming them to the chill family in September.”
This announcement comes in anticipation of the 2023 Canberra Chill women’s extended training squad which will be announced on Wednesday the 12th of July.
