It was a sunny and sweltering day at the State Hockey Centre, which saw the Blaze host their second home games against the Perth Thundersticks.
The women’s game was tough with both teams putting it all on the line. Blaze Captain Ash Fey scored a penalty corner at the end of the first quarter taking the score to 1-0. The second was another strong quarter, and left both teams scoreless.
A penalty corner from Ash Fey and a field goal from Ruby Harris in the third, took the score out to 3-0 to the home side, where it remained until the final siren.
Australian Kookaburras in both men’s teams, meant both the Blaze and Thundersticks’ teams came out full speed. A penalty corner from Corey Weyer in the final minute of the first quarter brought the teams to the first break.
Shane Kenny’s overhead from the defensive backline resulted in an incredible goal to Joel Rintala in the 26th minute, firing Dylan Wotherspoon up for his field goal and conversion in the 29th. Perth Thundersticks captain Trent Mitton smacked one into the net in the 3rd quarter, but it wasn’t enough to stop the home side.
Daniel Beale finished off the scoring for the day in the fourth, leaving the home team victors 5-1.
The Blaze men remain undefeated and are a game clear on top of the standings. The women now sit in second position behind the undefeated HC Melbourne team. Brisbane will now head into their bye round, before playing at home again in Round 7 on Saturday 2nd November.
