The Perth Thundersticks have received a high-profile boost with Western Australiaâs most senior Federal Labor MP Madeleine King recruited as the number one ticket holder for WAâs open-age menâs and womenâs hockey sides ahead of the 2022 Sultana Bran Hockey One League season.
Ms King MP, the Federal Minister for Resources and the Minster for Northern Australia, said she was delighted to be named the leading supporter of the Perth Thundersticks.
Ms King said she was honoured to be giving something back to the sport that had been such a big part of her life.
When she was a student, Ms King played in the University of Western Australia Hockey Club 2s and 1s sides, taking part in University Games. She then played for a team in Peel  – the Hustlers.
She continued to play for UWA and University Associates and represented Hockey WA in the WA Masters 35s and 40s team for five years.
Hockey Australia is currently considering rival bids to move its High Performance Program to the East Coast. WA has been home to the High Performance Program since 1984.
âWestern Australia has a wonderful program with the Hockey Australia High Performance Program based here â itâs been critical for the nationâs development of hockey, through the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games and World Cups through to the success of the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras,â Ms King MP said.
Ms King said she had developed life-long friendships through the sport.
Hockey WA CEO Fabian Ross said it was wonderful to have Ms Kingâs backing ahead of the 2022 Hockey One League season.
âWe are incredibly excited for the season ahead, and the incredibly exciting future the sport of hockey has in Western Australia,â Ross said.
The Thundersticksâ 2022 season begins on October 1 at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.
