NSW Pride v HC Melbourne
Friday, 6.30pm AEDT (Women) 8.15pm AEDT (Men)
Newcastle International Hockey Centre, Broadmedow
This is the round’s headline act. HC Melbourne women, beaten 6–4 by Adelaide Fire last week, are determined to rebound quickly as they chase a finals berth. The debut of international Rosie Hope, capped for England in the FIH Pro League, adds composure and elite experience to their midfield. The Pride, unbeaten and top of the ladder, strengthen further with Ella Carr and debutant goalkeeper Tegan Neowhouse joining a squad already boasting record breaker Abby Wilson and the drive of Grace Young, Maddi Smith and Alana Kavanagh. For HC Melbourne, it is about proving they can match the league’s elite, whereas for NSW Pride it is about consolidating their status as the team to beat.
The men’s clash pits the defending champions HC Melbourne against a NSW Pride side intent on redemption after their late collapse against Tassie. Melbourne’s 13–1 demolition of Adelaide Fire showcased Daan Smits and Cooper Burns at their ruthless best, but they will be without fellow goal scorer Carlin Walker, replaced by Kieran Arunasalam. NSW Pride regain Dylan Downey and Toby Mallon, while Blake Govers seeks to make amends for a missed conversion. For neutrals, this is the benchmark versus the challenger with HC Melbourne’s title defence under its first real stress test. Expect some early fireworks.

Adelaide Fire v Perth Thundersticks
Saturday, 4.00pm ACDT (Women) 5.45pm ACDT (Men)
State Hockey Centre, Gepps Cross
Adelaide Fire arrive with confidence after upsetting HC Melbourne 6–4 in their season opener, powered by Georgina Dowd’s hat trick and Breanna Catley’s double. They’ll look to build on that momentum at home. Their opponent’s Perth have been forced into a reshuffle with Hockeyroo Penny Squibb and Caitlyn Templeman a late out, replaced by Hockeyroo Kaitlin Nobbs as well as Rachel Frusher. Brit De Silva keeps her place after impressing off the bench last week in their shootout loss to Canberra, while the Thundersticks’ forward trio of Courtney Schonell, Madi Ratcliffe and Lexie Pickering will be looking to build on their miserly return of one goal so far. Could this be the week they finally catch fire and turn pressure into points against the Fire’s backline led by Lucy Sharman and Hattie Shand? With both sides eyeing a finals push, this match feels like a genuine swing fixture in the women’s ladder race.
This is arguably the most consequential clash of the round with the stakes huge for both men’s sides, who won’t want to contemplate defeat. Adelaide’s 13–1 loss to HC Melbourne and Perth’s 8–0 defeat to Canberra were the heaviest of the season, leaving both sides winless and under scrutiny. Adelaide can lean on goalkeeper Leon Hayward, who made 17 saves against Melbourne, and are boosted by Burras stars Bryce Hammond and Lucas Toonen. Perth will look to Jake Harvie and James Collins, whilst they re-gain Under 21 hero Ian Grobbelaar, scorer of both goals in the Johor Cup final. This is more than a match. It is a crossroad moment. The winner can reset their season and prove they are building towards something, while the loser risks being left behind and may be forced to confront deeper questions about their trajectory.

Canberra Chill v Brisbane Blaze
Sunday, 1.30pm AEDT (Men) 3.15pm AEDT (Women)
EPC Solar Hockey Stadium, Lyneham
Fresh from their shootout win in Perth, Canberra Chill women are further buoyed by the debut of Paris Olympic star Alice Arnott and the form of Mikayla Evans, who claimed the Celebration of the Week following her deft deflection goal. Chill keeper Alyssa Smith was heroic in the shootout, while Amy Lawton continues to dictate midfield. But the Blaze arrive fresh from a bye and their star-studded line-up is further strengthened by the return of Kendra Fitzpatrick. Under new coach Angie Lambert, they looked every bit a title threat in Round One with devastating counterattacks and their speedy forward line. This is a genuine ladder shaping clash. Can Canberra build momentum with another big-name scalp or will Blaze underline their championship credentials?
This is unquestionably a heavyweight showdown. The Canberra Chill men were rampant in their 8–0 win over Perth, with Davis Atkin and Jake Staines starring. The only sour note was they lost Kookaburra Anand Gupte to a broken hand, but he is replaced by Burras defender Dylan Brick in a like for like selection decision. Brisbane Blaze return with Matthew Hawthorne and Daykin Stanger rejoining, while Joel Rintala is back after a two goal effort and Player of the Match display in Round One. Both sides have dual threats from open play and penalty corners and are finals contenders. This match shapes as one that will reveal who is ready to challenge HC Melbourne at the top.

Tassie Tigers – Round Three Bye
The Tigers get an early season break heading into next week’s home game against the Adelaide Fire on Saturday, November 1. It was a thrilling win for the men’s team last week, in one of the league’s greatest ever comebacks, Tassie stormed home with four unanswered goals in the final seven minutes to clinch an important victory. After two narrow losses, the women’s team will have their eyes focused on securing their first win of the season.
