BRISBANE BLAZE v PERTH THUNDERSTICKS
Friday, 6.30pm AEST (Men) 8.15pm AEST (Women)
Queensland State Hockey Centre, Brisbane

The season opens with a blockbuster double header.

In the men’s clash, Brisbane’s Jake Whetton, Jayden Atkinson and Joel Rintala will be out with a point to prove. Rintala, overlooked for the recent Oceania Cup, will be desperate to remind selectors of his scoring touch that included 13 goals in 16 appearances. A new-look Perth will counter with a youthful brigade featuring several debutants and lean on the leadership of national stars Jake and Tom Harvie plus James Collins to steady the ship.

The women’s fixture is a direct replay of the 2024 Grand Final, where Perth completed an unbeaten season with a commanding 4–1 victory over Brisbane. That result still stings for the Blaze, who now have the chance to exact revenge on opening night. Perth bolster their formidable attack with former Hockeyroo Maddi Radcliff, whilst Penny Squibb and goalkeeper Zoe Newman will be eager to restate their Hockeyroos credentials. Brisbane’s exciting forwards Hannah Cullum-Sanders, Jade Smith and Ruby Harris will look to ignite the home crowd, while debutant opposition coaches Angie Lambert (Blaze) and Steph Andrews (Thundersticks) vie for early bragging rights.

CANBERRA CHILL v NSW PRIDE
Saturday, 2.00pm AEDT (Women) 3.45pm AEDT (Men)
EPC Solar Hockey Stadium, Canberra

The Chill welcome NSW Pride to the capital in a Saturday showcase that promises plenty of fireworks.

For the women, all eyes will be on Alice Arnott as she lines up against her former Pride teammates, alongside star New Zealand acquisitions Olivia Shannan and Anna Crowley. Canberra will be hoping to give her plenty of supply, while NSW look to emerging talents Makayla Jones and Amalia Patterson to step into bigger roles. There’s also a dream debut for Canberra goalkeeper Alyssa Smith as she pushes for higher honours.

On the men’s side, Canberra will start hot favourites after last year’s silver medal and they’ll be looking for a strong defensive start to life without retired goalkeeper Andrew Charter. Davis Atkin, Anand Gupte and Jay MacDonald will all be eager to showcase their pedigree in front of national selectors. The Pride, however, will be led by skipper Blake Govers and know how to spoil the party — the last time they visited Canberra in 2023, they edged the Chill 3–2 in a thriller, underlining just how fine the margins are in this border rivalry.

TASSIE TIGERS v HC MELBOURNE
Sunday, 2.30pm AEDT (Women) 4.15pm AEDT (Men)
Tasmanian Hockey Centre, Hobart

The Bass Strait Battle closes out Round One in Hobart, with the Tigers hosting defending champions HC Melbourne in front of a parochial home crowd.

The men’s clash is loaded with intrigue. Tassie’s Beltz brothers and Jack Welch have been talking up their chances of victory at home, and they’ve added the defensive stewardship of Matt Swann to an experienced core featuring Eddie Ockenden, Tim Deavin and Jeremy Edwards. Defending champions HC Melbourne boast a dynamic midfield led by Peter Scott and Liam Henderson, while Kookaburras keeper Jed Snowden debuts after two standout seasons with Adelaide Fire. History suggests Melbourne hold the edge — they beat Tassie 4–1 in Hobart and 2–1 in the 2023 bronze medal playoff — but the Tigers’ support makes this one of the league’s toughest road trips.

In the women’s match, the stakes are high: whoever takes the points here will gain a critical edge in the race for a semi final berth. Melbourne’s midfield is bolstered by marquee recruit Bek Greiner, while Tassie’s giant killing run to last year’s grand final proved they can never be underestimated on home turf. Fresh off a first semi-final appearance in 2024, the Tigers have recruited aggressively with Paris Olympians Jane Claxton and Steph Kershaw, linking up with internationals Roos Swann and Kathryn Lane.
