The ONE Active Hockey One League enters Round Five, and for several sides, it’s now or never. With the finals series in Melbourne fast approaching, ladder positions are tightening, and every point could prove decisive.
The men’s competition sees the return of several key Kookaburras from their European stints, providing a timely boost as teams look to strengthen their campaigns for the run home. Meanwhile, the women’s race to join the NSW Pride in the 2025 Finals Series is intensifying by the week.

HC Melbourne men are in prime position to secure a home finals berth, and with Craig Marais returning, they’ll field an imposing lineup boasting nine Kookaburras. But Brisbane Blaze won’t make it easy – they welcome back key players Corey Weyer and Lachie Sharp, who’s set to debut in Blaze colours after his off-season move from NSW Pride. Expect a fast, physical contest between two of the league’s most talent-stacked rosters.
For the women, it’s do-or-die time for Brisbane. The Blaze must win all three of their remaining matches to stay in finals contention, and head coach Angie Lambert has turned to youth and energy – with 2025 Hockeyroos debutants Karissa van der Wath, Jamie-Lee Surha, and Ruby Harris all travelling to Melbourne. HC Melbourne, buoyed by last week’s statement win over the reigning premiers, have named an unchanged side as they push to consolidate their spot inside the top four.

Tassie Tigers women will be out for redemption in Hobart after last year’s heartbreaking semi-final defeat to the Thundersticks. The Tigers finally clicked into gear last round, pulling off a gutsy upset over the high-flying Adelaide Fire, and will look to build momentum on home turf. Perth, meanwhile, are desperate to reignite their campaign – with only four points from four games, they’ll need a turnaround in both results and goal difference if they’re to defend their 2024 title.
The Thundersticks men face a similar challenge. Sitting on five points with a -9 goal difference, Stephen Davies’ side will rely on their senior Kookaburras contingent to step up alongside breakout performer Ian Grobbelaar, who’s impressed in his opening two appearances. For Tassie, confidence is high after last week’s 3–0 shutout of Adelaide, powered by Ehren Hazell’s heroics. With a favourable run home, a win here could set them on course for a long-awaited finals return.

The Fire’s finals hopes suffered a blow with star Hockeyroo Lucy Sharman sidelined by a hand injury, but Marcelle Keet’s group remains confident after a bye week and will aim to rediscover the form that saw them edge Brisbane Blaze 1–0 in Round 3. Canberra, featuring several Jillaroos bound for the Junior World Cup, will be eager to leave their mark before heading to Santiago.
The men’s match promises star power and intensity in equal measure. For the first time this season, fans will see two of the world’s best in action on the same field – Kookaburras defender Jeremy Hayward joins his brother Leon for Adelaide, while Tom Craig returns from Europe to spearhead Canberra’s attack. With the Chill needing victory to stay in finals contention, they’ll look to replicate their emphatic 6–2 win over Adelaide from 2024.

NSW Pride – Round Five Bye
NSW Pride are in a strong position going into their Hockey One Round Five bye. The only side so far to remain undefeated are the NSW Pride women’s team who are also the first side to qualify for the 2025 Finals Series. In the men’s competition the Pride sit second with two wins, one shootout win, and one loss. NSW Pride host the Adelaide Fire next week in Goulburn on Friday night in what could be a top-of-the table clash for the women’s sides.
