Forget fancy superfoods – NSW Pride star and current Hockeyroo Abby Wilson is keeping it real with oats, wraps and a little bit of coffee magic. But behind those seemingly simple food choices lies the fuel of a world-class athlete – and a few surprises that might make you rethink your own pre-game snacks!
Abby, who grew up playing hockey on the grass fields of Lithgow, is now wearing the iconic green and gold as a striker for the Hockeyroos. She’s set to represent Australia on the UK and Europe leg of the FIH Pro League tour, which kicks off next week on 7 June.
Her rise to elite sport hasn’t just been about grit and grind – her diet plays a key role in keeping her match-ready. And spoiler: there’s no secret kale smoothie.
“I never really used to be a breakfast person, but knowing that it’s going to be a big session, you do need to fuel yourself,” she says.
Despite early morning training sessions, Abby admits she wasn’t always “team brekkie”. Her current approach? Practical, flexible, and based on what her body needs. No rigid meal plans or Instagram-worthy prep – just smart, solid choices to stay ready for performance.
So what does an international hockey star eat before a big game?
“I sometimes make oats – like, very boring oats,” Abby laughs. “They’re quite dry. I just put some fruit on it.”
Other pre-game favourites include pasta, salad wraps, and whatever’s available from the team kitchen – because when you’re travelling internationally, the comforts of your perfect pre-game meal can disappear quickly.
From her journey through country hockey to her go-to coffee routine, Abby shared more about her path to the Pro League in a refreshingly honest chat with Hattie and Indy from the Canobolas Cast.
