High-level clash awaits as Thundersticks Women take on Malaysia

The Perth Thundersticks women’s side is set to experience elite competition in preparation for this year’s Hockey One season, with a series against the Malaysian National Women’s Team to be played at multiple venues this week.

The series is part of a reciprocal arrangement between the Malaysian Hockey Confederation and Hockey WA, with recent events including a Hockey WA Under-23 Invitational Team visiting Kuala Lumpur for a four-game series against the Malaysian Under-21 Men’s Team.

The Perth Thundersticks Women will be transformed into the Perth Thundersticks All Stars Women, with a range of current squad members and elite WA talent to comprise the side set to tackle Malaysia head on.

In a unique opportunity for WA hockey, matches in the series will be played across various community venues, with Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University, Lakelands Hockey and Sporting Facility, and Warwick Hockey Centre to be set alight with the elite hockey spectacle.

Hockey WA Head of Asian Engagement, Chris Ciriello, is thrilled to welcome a top-level national side to WA – presenting a unique opportunity to develop our local talent to the highest level.

“The series is an awesome chance for the Perth Thundersticks Women to go up against the Malaysian National Women’s Team and work on their skills in a real game scenario.” Ciriello said.

“Not everyone gets the chance to taste international competition, so this exposure, right before the Hockey One league, presents a fantastic opportunity.

“It’s also going to give Malaysia a real push before the Asian Games.”

The Hockey One season commences for the Perth Thundersticks on Saturday 7 October against the Canberra Chill, with preparations in full flight ahead of the season and the final team announcement on Friday 18 August.

The series will also be beneficiary to the Malaysian National Women’s Team as they prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers.

Perth Thundersticks Tickets and memberships for the 2023 Hockey One season are on sale now – don’t miss your chance to cheer on WA’s best.
