The adage ‘do you want the good news or the bad news?’ could not be more fitting following the announcement former Hockeyroos defender Edwina Bone will not play for Canberra Chill in the Sultana Bran Hockey One League 2022 Season.
The bad news is just that. Bone’s absence and experience will be sorely missed by a Canberra Chill side who were a shootout away from reaching the women’s Hockey One League grand final in the inaugural season.
However, if there was one reason (and it’s likely there wouldn’t be many others) that would prevent Bone from running out in the blue and gold, it is that she is pregnant and due to give birth in early 2023. Not just good news but amazing and exciting.
As reported by Isobell Cootes in The Canberra Times, Bone was set to join the Chill squad for the Hockey One League season but will now cheer them on from her home in Perth.
The other twist in the tale is that Edwina’s twin sister Meredith is debuting as the Chill’s Women’s Head Coach this season.
“I always look forward to returning to Canberra and playing with the Chill,” Bone told The Canberra Times.
“I have always loved playing for Canberra, but if I must miss a season, I couldn’t imagine a better reason. We are so excited to welcome a new member of our family in early 2023.”
Bone’s withdrawal means it’s good news for youngster Madeline Dooley who has been added to the Chill’s squad. Dooley comes in after impressive performances at the Australian Under 21 Championships and with her local club.
After having the bye in Round 1, Canberra Chill opens its Sultana Bran Hockey One League 2022 Season away against Brisbane Blaze on Thursday night.
Tickets for the double header are available now through Ticketek. The matches will also be LIVE on FOX Sports and Kayo.
