As the 2024 Hockey One season approaches, the Perth Thundersticks are banking on a blend of young talent and seasoned expertise to pave the way for success, unveiling the roster that will electrify the competition this year.
Perth Thundersticks and Hockey WA are pleased to announce the list of athletes that will form the 2024 Men’s and Women’s teams for the upcoming Hockey One season.
The Women’s team will see the return of 17 players from the 2023 squad and welcome several new faces in the form of international import Eva Drummond, Caitlyn Templeman, as well as Hockeyroos Kaitlin Nobbs and Courtney Schonell – who move west from NSW Pride this year.
The squad also welcomes back Hockeyroo Aleisha Power, who was ruled out of the 2023 season due to injury, as well as Candyce Peacock and Jolie Sertorio, who both previously played for the Thundersticks in 2019 and 2022.
Perth Thundersticks Women’s Head Coach Phil Hulbert said he is confident the selected squad will continue to produce good hockey after the team came close to reaching the top of the mountain in the past two seasons.
“All the players that were invited have had great club seasons, so we wanted to see them all playing in some competitive games against each other, providing another opportunity to showcase their skills,” he said.
“I believe the squad that has been chosen has a good mixture of youth and experience.
“There are some new faces to the squad this year and we are excited to see them in action at training.
“I am sure each of these players will add to our group.”
While 14 players will reprise their roles from the 2023 season, the Men’s squad has welcomed numerous fresh faces this year.
Six players that have been part of the WA Under-21 National Championship dynasty from 2022 to 2024 will be looking to make a splash in Hockey One this year.
Those players are Sam Ashton, Chaz Davies, Tom Keating, and Kye Stirrat, as well as Burras squad members Angus Adamson and Max Freedman.
The squad also welcomes Fraser Heigh, who moves over from Adelaide Fire this year, as well as Christian Starkie – who previously played for the Fire in the 2022 Hockey One season.
Returning to the Thundersticks this year are Dane Gavranich and Coby Green – who played in 2019, as well as Harry Golding, who was part of the 2022 squad that achieved the Hockey One silver medal.
Although he will not be returning to the Thundersticks squad this year, Kookaburras skipper Aran Zalewski will train with and provide support to the group as he prepares for international playing commitments.
Perth Thundersticks Men’s Head Coach Stephen Davies said while the squad looks quite different to last season, he was very happy with the selections made.
“It’s a lot of hard work selecting a team but this is a purpose-built squad with a view of being extremely competitive this year and we do believe we’ve got the capacity to contend for the title this year,” he said.
“There’s a lot of history behind the Perth Thundersticks and I’ll be big on the players being grateful for the opportunity they’ve been given, and they are now going to represent such a tremendous legacy.
“There’s no reason why we can’t go out there and give it a red-hot shake.”
